18 Jul 36 students attend to the second edition of the PhytoSUDOE project summer course
The summer course on “Energy Crops and Phytomanagement in a Circular Economy Model” organized by the Environmental Studies Centre (CEA) of Vitoria-Gasteiz in collaboration with the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and held during July 13 and 14 has fulfilled its objectives completing practically all the places offered with 36 students enrolled, and welcoming high-level scientific and technical sessions.
Among those attending the course were students related to the world of research (NEIKER, UPV/EHU, University of Valladolid), administration (Basque Government, IHOBE), private or autonomous companies (Basoinsa, Edafotec, Ecos, Luar, Paisatge) and even belonging to associations or cooperatives (Zero Zabor, Sustraiak) without leaving aside several media that covered the course.
The speakers included experts from the Spanish state as well as the United Kingdom, France and Belgium and covered various aspects related to the restoration of degraded soils in a circular economy framework. The results of phytoremediation projects including the use of the biomass produced in them for multiple purposes in England, France and Spain were presented by Andrew Cundy (University of Southampton), Michel Chalot (University of Bourgogne Franche-Comté) and Rocio Millán (CIEMAT), respectively. New exploitation systems of silvopasture were also presented by Maria Rosa Mosquera of the University of Santiago de Compostela. Regarding how to be efficient and to obtain the greatest economic profitability out of the crops used in phytoremediation, interesting results were presented by Tom Kuppens (University of Hasselt), Aser Garcia (NEIKER) and Amaya Arteche (TECNALIA). Finally, two communications were devoted to circular economy by presenting strategies and examples in the Basque Country and Navarra (Spain), being able to listen to Iñaki Susaeta from the public society IHOBE (Basque Government) and Natxo Irigoyen from the Public University of Navarra.
Finally, it is worth mentioning the high participation in the field trip on the second day of the course, where the local partners of the PhytoSUDOE project were able to make an introduction to the project and also update the participants in situ on the works carried out to date on the sites (S5 and S6) of Vitoria-Gasteiz. In summary, the evaluation that is made of the second edition of the course is very positive and since its closure CEA technicians are already working on preparing the third and final edition of the PhytoSUDOE summer courses to be held next year.
